British Rail in the 80s - Class 91
4th January 1980

Photos of the first 10 Class 91s on their introduction on the East Coast Main Line of the UK on 11th March 1989 through to the end of 1989, with a few taken into the 90s.

At introduction, the 91s worked on Mark 3 HST coaches with a Class 43 at the London end converted as a DVT. Eight were converted and were easily identified as they are the only ones with buffers (43013, 43014, 43065, 43067, 43068, 43080, 43084 and 43123) Both locos powered the trains and made them the highest powered trains ever in Britain.

The Mark 4 sets were introduced into traffic in early November 1989 on certain trains but did not enter full service until early 1990.

The 91s worked all the trains on the Leeds-Kings Cross route as this was then the only electrified part of the East Coast Main Line, and did not work the Glasgow services until 1991 when the rest of the line was electrified, and the remainder of the 31 Class 91s were delivered
